Confirmed reports are coming in that alleged leaders of the Montreal Mafia, including Leonardo Rizzuto, 55, are being arrested Thursday morning following a lengthy investigation based on the worst-kept secret in law enforcement in Quebec. The info is coming from mob rat Frederick Silva.
For the third time in less than two decades, the Rizzuto organization has been hit by a major investigation into organized crime. During a press conference held at Montreal police headquarters Thursday, police confirmed that alleged leaders of the Montreal Mafia, including Leonardo Rizzuto, 56, and Stefano Sollecito, 57, were arrested Thursday morning following a lengthy investigation dubbed Project Alliance that was based on the worst-kept secret in law enforcement in Quebec: information provided to investigators by Frédérick Silva, a hit man alleged to have killed for the Montreal Mafia.
Rizzuto and Sollecito are also charged with conspiring to kill Raynald Desjardins, a man tied to the Montreal Mafia, and conspiring to kill Salvatore Montagna, a Mafia leader who was killed for trying to take over the Montreal Mafia years ago. In 2022, Silva received one of four life sentences he is currently serving for the attempted murder of Salvatore Scoppa, a leader of a clan that opposed the Sicilian Rizzutos for leadership over the Montreal Mafia. Scoppa was shot by Silva in Terrebonne on Feb. 21, 2017. He survived that attempt on his life, but he was later killed at a hotel in Laval. Eleven people were arrested Thursday and another five are still being sought on arrest warrants. Nearly 150 officers executed warrants in Montreal, Laval, Blainville, Shefford, St-Lazare, Repentigny, Quebec City and Rosemère.
